Dear all I - IV: Bohuslav Martinů's letters to his family in Polička (Eds. Jaromír Synek & Gabriela Všetičková)

The extensive correspondence between Bohuslav Martinů and his family in Polička is extremely valuable historical material documenting not only the professional side of the composer's life, but also the thoroughly personal one. The individual letters provide valuable information about negotiations with publishers and politicians, about correspondence and personal meetings with colleagues and friends, and of course also about the compositions and the difficulties or successes in presenting them on world and domestic stages. More than anywhere else, Bohuslav Martinů appears here as a "man of flesh and bones", with everyday worries and joys. Personal correspondence with those closest to him thus helps to complete the overall picture of the composer's life and work and is an imaginary "umbilical cord" - an irreplaceable connection between abroad and home.

This is a one-sided correspondence, only Bohuslav Martinů's letters addressed to the family have survived, the composer did not archive the received letters due to the large volume of his correspondence. Even so, unique authentic messages can be found in these documents, in which Martinů himself comments on his life and professional journey. The letters are presented in the form of a diplomatic transcript and supplemented with thorough commentary.
