Bohuslav Martinů Institute, o.p.s.
The Bohuslav Martinů Institute in Prague was founded in 1995 as the Bohuslav Martinů Study Centre. The idea of establishing a study centre that would provide a complete information service for those interested in the life and work of Bohuslav Martinů came from PhDr. Viktor Kalabis, former President of the Board of Trustees of the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation.
In 1999, the BM Foundation's Board of Directors approved a name change to the Bohuslav Martinů Institute, which continued to operate until 2005 as part of the Foundation, and from 1 January 2006 the Bohuslav Martinů Institute changed its legal personality and became a public benefit corporation.
The main goal of the Institute is to collect all available documents from and materials about Bohuslav Martinů so that interested musicologists, performers, scholars and the general public can study the composer's life and work in the full context. To this end, a library of printed scores, copies of manuscripts, musicological literature on twentieth-century music, and an extensive archive of visual documents and sound media has been created.
Since Bohuslav Martinů traveled widely and lived not only in the Czech Republic but mostly in Western Europe and the United States, his manuscript scores, correspondence, and other documents are now housed in a number of public institutions or in the hands of private individuals around the world. The Bohuslav Martinů Institute is thus creating a base for Martinů research, making information available to interested parties from all over the world.
